Martha's Vineyard 101For those of you new to Martha's Vineyard, we have compiled a list of interesting facts about the island... GeologyMartha's Vineyard, the largest island in New England, was formed by glacial action 10,000 years ago and lies 7 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. The island is roughly shaped like a triangle with its base the straight south shore. It is 9 miles wide and 23 miles long at its furthest points and has a total land area of about 100 square miles. The Vineyard has 124.6 miles of tidal shoreline. Island TownsThere are six towns on Martha's Vineyard; three up-island towns: Aquinnah, Chilmark and West Tisbury and three down-island towns: Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, which includes Chappaquiddick. The terms up-island and down-island are nautical references to degrees of longitude designated on maps and charts. LegendLegend has it that in 1602, the English explorer, Bartholomew Gosnold, who was charting New England waters, came upon a beautiful island where he found a profusion of grapes growing wild. He named the island for these vines and his baby daughter, Martha. Trivia: John and LizaOK, you will be quizzed on this at the Rehearsal dinner, so pay attention... John and Liza first vacationed together on Martha's Vineyard in 1995, (although Liza has been coming to the Vineyard summers since 1988). They both waited tables at Offshore Ale from 1996-2000 (summers). The first summer they rented a house on the Vineyard for the summer, they shared a 3 bedroom ranch with 6 other friends. (John slept in a shed in the back - we won't divulge his nick name for it - Liza had a couch in the den) Liza's favorite Martha's Vineyard Beach is the Inkwell beach in Oak Bluffs, because she loves how social it is. John's favorite beach is Edgartown South Beach - for the surf. John has won the brass ring at the Flying Horses 25 times. Liza has won it 26. Combined they figure they have ridden the Merry-Go-Round over 100 times.
